Material Handling Education Foundation Announces 2010 Reed-Apple Award Winner

Presentation made by Reed-Apple Award Winner, John Hill to the
2010 MHEFI Reed-Apple Award Winner – Dr. Russ Meller of the University of Arkansas.

“The Reed-Apple Award was established to memorialize material handling education pioneers Dr. Jim Apple, Sr. of Georgia Tech and Dr. Rudy Reed of Purdue.  The award recognizes outstanding individuals for their contributions, dedication, and service to the material handling logistics field as well as their support of the Material Handling Education Foundation.  Over the past 30 years, the Material Handling Education Foundation’s Reed-Apple Award has been presented to eighteen people.”

“I am honored to be here today on behalf of one of those people, Dr. John White, long-time supporter of our profession, legendary teacher and former Chancellor of the University of Arkansas to present the award to John’s academic grandson – Dr. Russell D. Meller, Hefley Professor of Logistics & Entrepreneurship in the University of Arkansas’ Department of Industrial Engineering and Director of the National Science Foundation-sponsored Center for Engineering, Logistics and Distribution.”

“Recommended for the award by Dr. White and endorsed by former Reed-Apple recipients Dr. Richard Ward, Dr. Leon McGinnis, Dr. Jim Apple Jr., as well as former Material Handling Industry Executive Chairman, Brian McNamara, Russ Meller has distinguished himself as an educator,  counselor, writer with an unmatched number of publications, patent holder, consultant and innovator in the eighteen years since receiving his PhD from the University of Michigan.  Involved with the College & Industry Council on Material Handling Education for over thirteen years as an officer and President, Russ measures up to everything the Reed-Apple Award presents and I am delighted to see him added to the roster as the 19th recipient of this prestigious honor. “

“I once read that a good teacher is like a candle that consumes itself – to light the way for others.  Russ, you’ve lighted the way for all of us – both old-timers and newcomers – and, we look forward to your continuing contributions and guidance for many years to come.”
