Racks of stamped parts are off loaded at several docks onto gravity fed conveyors. A system of self-guided vehicles (SGVs) delivers full racks of stamped parts to over and under conveyors. Indexing of conveyors creates the automatic demand for additional SGV delivered parts. Empties are then returned by the SGVs to the originating dock for return to vendor. The SGVs operate on 2 shifts per day making over 1,100 deliveries of 32 different components.
Each of the SGVs uses laser guidance to maneuver through the facility. The flexibility of laser guidance allows changes to the vehicle guidepath to be implemented quickly and easily; the plant has already introduced several changes. Each SGV has the same reach fork design, which enables it to lift, lower and carry a variety of parts held in custom racks.
Roughly 80% of the racked parts are handled by the fleet of self-guided vehicles. As a result, this SGV system has played a major role in providing a safe, efficient material handling solution for the assembly plant.
