This state-of-the-art carbon and stainless steel rolling, galvanizing, and annealing facility relies on 14 bi-directional AGVs for nearly all steel coil transport within the extensive plant. These non-wire inertial guided vehicles travel along 7,000 feet of "virtual" guidepath transporting steel coils weighing up to 100,000 pounds between 35 coil stands located at various process areas. The AGVs feature lift/lower load decks with automatic coil sensing and centering in the coil stands.
The system is controlled by the Vehicle System Manager (VSM). The VSM coordinates AGV transportation of coils into and out of storage and between process operations communicating through a continuous FM radio link. Coil transport and routing information is communicated to the VSM from the plant's coil management computer system. The VSM then selects the most appropriate AGV to perform the operation. The AGV interface to overhead cranes and process equipment is also directed by the VSM.
AGV control and guidance is managed by an on-board fully digital Vehicle Control Computer (VCC-2). The VCC-2 is the brain behind the inertial guidance system that also uses a solid state gyroscope and the supplier's location technology to accurately maintain the AGV's path of travel.
The vehicles use automatic opportunity charging which the supplier's engineers determined to be the most effective battery charging system for this massive facility. Each vehicle is equipped with controls that allow the vehicle to automatically recharge its batteries at designated charging locations. Charge contacts are provided on the vehicle to charge the vehicle's batteries from charging plates mounted on the plant floor.
