AGVs work around the clock moving finished goods at this automotive parts maker's new plant: For this tier one automotive supplier, the material handling strategy is simple: automate whenever economically justifiable. An AGV system has made this justification an easy one. According to the customer, payback was reached in less than one year of operation. The AGVs allow the hourly work force to perform their greatest function, which is to create world-class plastic components.

Ergonomic gains make for a safer, healthier work force: Although measuring these gains become difficult, less lifting and straining undoubtedly leads to fewer lost days due to injury. This not only saves money but also leads to a better work environment that directly correlates to productivity.

Flexible AGVS support dynamic manufacturing: The AGVS uses a grid of magnets embedded into the floor for calibration. Extending the array of magnets in simple and quick. The control system communicates with the vehicles through RF. Positional accuracy is within 1/8th of an inch. Layout changes are extremely user friendly. Altering the paths on which the AGVs travel is as simple as pointing and clicking.

At a Glance: The shop floor is 145,000 sq. ft. There are approximately 100 employees. The products produced are plastic parts from injection molding machines with an output of 1 billion pieces (10 million lbs.) annually. More than 2,000 totes are handled daily.
