Transport system vital cog in Adelaide: Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia this company employs approximately 28,000 people with a turnover of AUD 8 billion making it one of the largest manufacturers of glass and plastic containers in the world. There are six plants based in Australia, one of which is in Adelaide, near the heart of the Australian wine region. This highly automated plant invested in new glass furnaces that increased its production volume more than 100% thereby placing added demand on to the automated transport system.
Design for Modularity: The fleet consists of 18 vehicles that are all equipment with controls. The vehicle itself measures nearly 4.2 meters wide while standing 4 meters tall. To ship a large vehicle such a great distance, a modular design was used, allowing fast and easy on-site assembly.
Clamping down on the bottles: The AGVs are responsible for the transportation of full pallet loads of unwrapped bottles to the shrink-wrap lines, where the pallets are wrapped in plastic before shipping. A fully loaded pallet weighs 1200 kgs. and the vehicles have the capacity to handle 2 pallets simultaneously. The pallet height, however, varies from 1 to 2.8 meters. To prevent the bottles on the pallets from moving, the AGVs have been equipped with a special clamping system that secures them during transportation.
On time: All in all, the vehicles were up and running in Australia within eight months are receipt of purchase order.
