Innovative supply chain management: With some 86,000 employees worldwide and with a turnover of $45 billion, this company is the most important player in the world of computer systems, peripherals and computerization services, laser and inkjet printers, scanners and CD writers. At this particular German plant, workstations, servers and storage products are manufactured for the European market and configured to individual customer specifications. Forming an important part of their supply chain management, AGVs help deliver 80% of their orders in less than 24 hours. After looking at many different options, the most cost effective transport system would come from modifying their existing AGVs. The costs were recouped in 6 months.
Six vehicles handle pallets: Flexibility is important within a company that tailors its product to the needs of its customers. As customer's needs shift, so do the requirements upon the company and thus the transport system. The vehicles within this facility handle 95% of all pallet transportation between the warehouse and the distribution areas. The loads vary from raw materials to finished goods and everything in between.
Free ranging on grid: Programming new layouts, routes and station positions is done within the coordinating operating system. Specific stopping points, obstacles and traffic zones are created or modified and then downloaded into the vehicles. This download takes only minutes to complete.
3 types of vehicles, 1 operating system: At this facility, there are 3 different types of AGVs each with different transport capabilities. Since the operating system can distinguish between them, they can be coordinated by a single system.
