Automation improves process flow: When a major CD manufacturer wanted to bring their already somewhat automated material handling to a new level, they decided to implement a new automatic storage and retrieval system that integrated with a 10-vehicle automated laser-guided vehicle system. The goal was to completely automate the facility and have the LGV integrate with a robotic system. The management felt an innovative automation solution was needed to remain ahead of the competition.
Laser-guided vehicles provide complete material handling solution: New laser-guided vehicles (LGVs) were installed to replace hand and motorized pallet trucks to move product from production to packaging, and to move packaging supplies to the large automated and manual packaging areas. There are seven packaging machines with room for an eighth. Packaged discs are then gathered and a corrugated box is wrapped around them and sealed.
Robotics add complete solution: Once two boxes are accumulated, a robot is signaled to pick them up and take them to a printer/applicator where labels are produced. The robot then swings around and places the boxes in a pre-set pattern on the waiting pallet. A full pallet sends a signal for a laser-guided vehicle to pick it up. The result was a comprehensive solution for a 24-hour operation that is in a highly competitive market.
