Automation improves process flow
When a major CD manufacturer wanted to bring their already somewhat automated material handling to a new level, they decided to implement a new automatic storage and transportation system that integrated with a 10-vehicle automated laser-guided vehicle system.

The goal was to completely automate the facility and have the AGV integrate with the AS/RS system. The president felt an innovative automation solution was needed to remain ahead of the competition.

Automatic guided vehicles solution for material handling
New laser-guided vehicles were installed to replace hand and motorized pallet trucks to move product from production to packaging, and to move packaging supplies to the large automated and manual packaging areas.  Product is assembled by robots; that includes putting the disc in the jewel case, inserting the booklet, closing it, wrapping it and sealing it.  Finished products are palletized and then picked up by the AGV.

Automated Storage and Retrieval System completes the solution
A single-aisle mini-load AS/RS was fully integrated with the AGV system. The AGV stops prior to approaching the output station of the AS/RS, and items needed for the packaging stations could be supplied by the AS/RS.  In addition, items moved by the AGV or the AS/RS system could be “monitored” at any given point.

The result was a comprehensive solution for a 24-hour operation that is in a highly competitive market.
