AGV System Increases Productivity and Efficiency While Maintaining Safety: A major player in the automobile market, this manufacturer has operations in 37 countries around the world. Its Huntsville, Alabama facility handles the production and distribution of electronic components for their vehicles.

An ongoing project since the late 1980’s this system has continued to receive modifications, keeping itself running at peak efficiency for over fourteen years. This system, updated over time has transitioned from Ultraflex to Inertial guidance. During this crucial transition time, vehicles with different guidance systems were able to co-exist.

This automobile manufacturer’s system consists of 30 battery powered, inertial guided AGVs. Each vehicle has a dual-arm shuttle mechanism that moves a slave pallet with the dimensions of 46” wide x 53” long. This system consists of two subsystems with a shared guidepath. The two systems are referred to as the Distribution Center (DC) and the Finished Goods (FG) areas. The DC system is responsible for moving raw material from a storage area to the production area. It uses 21 vehicles to move staged loads from one of 18 pickup stations to one of 125 delivery stations. The FG system moves finished goods from the end of the production line to the shipping area.

Designed to carry a load weight of 1,200 lbs., this system has 23,000 feet of guidepath. Each vehicle offers a microprocessor on-board and communicates with an External Control System.
