At this 11-story, 1,000+bed hospital complex, Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) pickup and deliver materials on stainless steel carts to approximately 500 pick and drop off points. Each of the 43 vehicles can lift and transport loads weighing as much as 1,000 pounds throughout the facility.
The materials typically handled by the AGVs include carts of meal trays, medical/surgical supplies, linens, trash/waste, pharmaceuticals, and other general housekeeping items.
The AGVs make 3,000 material movements per day by interfacing with nine (9) dedicated freight elevators to transport materials to designated areas. Using the freight elevators frees up the personnel elevators and reduces wait times for patients, staff and visitors.
The AGVs enter and leave the freight elevators automatically to pick up and drop off loads from material handling rooms on the patient floors. User-friendly operator touch-screen panels allow personnel to request vehicles to send materials to designated floors throughout the hospital. The system also includes automated cart washers where soiled carts are delivered for automatic cleaning.
Using an AGV system was the lowest cost alternative to replace an obsolete overhead rail transport system which was originally used for automated cart transport in the hospital.
