AGVs Help with Reallocation of Capacity
For years automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) have been an important element in the production process for this cigarette manufacturer. A decision to relocate production capacity from one city to another prompted the need for a more dynamic system. Currently there are 11 vehicles transporting work-in-process loads between 10 production lines and 11 packaging machines working 24 hours per day, without delay or damage to goods. In the fiercely competitive tobacco market, this company strives to be the best through continuous improvements in quality and efficiency.
Flexibility Allows for Unification
The result of the move from the Berlin to the Bayreuth facility meant that two different AGV systems would need to be unified into one system. The Bayreuth system consisted of wire guided technology while the Berlin system was a laser-guided system. The two systems were combined into one and were modified to fit in with the new production process. Besides controllability, the AGVs guaranteed flexibility.
Smooth Driving, Accurate Positioning
The supply of the packaging machines is extremely important. If a single cigarette has moved during transportation the packaging machine will not be able to handle the container and the entire production process must be stopped. To prevent this, the vehicles are equipped with a special mechanism that tilts the containers slightly. Also, the acceleration and deceleration of the AGVs are handled in a very smooth way.
Wrap Up
The supervisory control system guarantees the flexibility of the AGVS by allowing changes or extensions of the routes and layout. It is also capable of handling several logistical concepts such as FIFO, LIFO etc.
