Through an education peer contact, a University learned that automated storage would allow for significantly reduced square footage when constructing a new, state-of-the art library to house their 750,000 volume collection. A specialized Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) from the supplier helped achieve these construction cost savings and improve inventory tracking. The supplier's specialized AS/RS provided secure storage, pinpoint on-hand accuracy, and fully automated service for bound periodicals, monographs, annuals, and other resources that were shared with other University campuses.
When a specific volume is requested, the University's online cataloging system sends a request to the AS/RS computer. The AS/RS searches its inventory for the requested materials and instructs one of its robots to retrieve the appropriate book bin. This bin is transported to 1 of 3 ergonomically designed workstations at the front of the aisle. Directed by the end-of-aisle graphics display, a library employee selects the requested book or material. A book transport monorail system conveys the materials from the workstation to any of 4 destinations within the library. Patrons are able to pick up their requested materials at any of these locations.
The AS/RS storage rack is a free standing, 3-aisle system. There are a total of 6,000 book bins, 24" wide by 48" deep, in 5 different heights. Excluding monorail, the supplier designed, programmed, and implemented all controls. The supplier's equipment control software is resident on a Linux operating system that manages the interface between the AS/RS and the online cataloging system. The control system contains extensive security, management, and diagnostic tools.
