This newspaper customer constructed a new building, creating a state-of-the-art facility that incorporates the latest technologies for roll handling, printing and distribution. The supplier collaborated with the newspaper to meet project objectives. The solution involved provided roll handling equipment, an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS), and equipment management software. The AS/RS allows for large-volume roll storage with a minimum of floor space.

Prior to each day's production run, a predetermined quantity of rolls are prepped and made available for production. Because rolls are prepped when it is convenient - typically during the day - it allows for a more level staffing of personnel. The AS/RS moves the unprepped rolls from storage to the prep equipment where the kraft paper is manually removed and the roll is pasted for automatic splicing. The system then returns the prepped rolls to storage. When a reel stand calls for a prepped roll, the AS/RS delivers the roll to a predetermined transfer car. In turn, the transfer car automatically feeds the roll onto the press chucks.

The control system tracks the age of the paster. If a roll exceeds a predetermined time in storage, it is sent back through prep for reapplication of a new paster. All controls were designed, programmed, and installed by the supplier. The supplier's equipment management software manages the prepped and unprepped roll inventory, their supplied equipment and the interface to the printing presses.
