This customer needed a facility to provide third-party logistic services to food manufacturers, eliminating the need for the manufacturers to maintain their own on-site and off-site warehouse facilities to store product. This highly automated facility provided cost efficiencies to the manufacturers and improved service levels to end customers. The new 225-acre site warehouse has been designed to receive 240 loads/hour on standard 40"x48" GMA/CHEP pallets. The new system is operational 20 hours/day, 6 days/week and includes full redundancy.

The system receives the pallets as they are delivered at the receiving dock doors, identifies them and stores them in the automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) via a multilevel high throughput conveyor network. The system then delivers pallets to the shipping dock doors where they are loaded onto trailers.

The solution includes fifteen 100' tall unit load storage and retrieval machines (SRMs). These are capable of handling over 240 loads in and 240 loads out per hour. The SRMs receive and disperse loads via the input and output conveyor spurs located at the front of the AS/RS. The design of the SRMs provides smooth, safe and accurate handling of loads within the storage system.

The supplier provided a unique pallet conveyor system that consists of 3 levels: ground, 17 ft., and 32 ft. elevations. This is combined with a series of high speed vertical lifts. The combination allows for a significant throughput of 480 pallets/hour handled simultaneously.

To meet this customer's growth, the supplier returned in 2005 to add an additional 10 aisles to the AS/RS. Since that expansion, this site can now handle 16,000 pallets per day!
