Problem This office products wholesaler was operating on three shifts with manual pallet handling equipment and 99% rack utilization. This resulted in a large amount of off site storage, slow response to replenishment requirements, high operating costs, and no room for expansion.
Solution In order to update this facility and resolve storage and operating issues, the existing rack and pallet handling system was expanded and automated. In addition, an integrated conveyor system for facility wide transportation and an integrated control system were also implemented.
Instead of just replacing the old manual VNA machines, technology was taken a step further and six (6) automated, floor- running, aisle-changing machines were supplied. A completely automated conveyor system and a substantial increase in the pallet storage capability within the existing aisle configuration were also incorporated.
A movement control system (MCS) was implemented on-site, which drives operation of the 1500 daily pallet incoming load identification, size checking and location / retrieval system. The fully integrated solution is supported on-site by a 24-hour dedicated site maintenance team, resulting in 99% uptime for the facility.
