In order to prepare for future growth, a major player in the specialty coffee industry decided it was time for a change. Originally, their 65,000 sq. ft. facility handled roasting, packaging, warehousing and distribution. However, in order to grow the business and expand their packaging operations, it was necessary to consolidate their warehousing and distribution operations and move them into a new building.
A state-of-the-art integrated material handling system was designed for the new 52,000 sq. ft. distribution center. The first phase of the project included 2 aisles of MSRS, a pallet/flow pick to light case pick tunnel, case conveyor, 90 degree and 30 degree divert case sorters, split case pick to light, 30 workstations and a warehouse execution system, which handles order management, inventory management, manpower optimization and system synchronization.
The coffee company and the integrator worked closely together to create a material handling system with future expansion in mind. The entire system came in under budget and was concepted, designed and built in just under 18 months (7 months ahead of schedule.) The company is thrilled with the new distribution center and is well on their way to meeting their goal of distributing 50 million pounds of coffee per year.
Phase two, already underway, includes 3 aisles of automatic storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), a 3 level pick tunnel with pick to light, an automatic guided vehicle system (AGVS) and manufacturing material handling such as t-cars and robots.
