When the existing automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) was nearing its service capacity, this beef processing plant looked for help in meeting projected growth and responding to its customer demands. The result was an expansion project to complement the existing automation and allow for both individual boxes and palletized loads to be shipped directly to their customers from the same docks.

The project integrated the new state of the art automation with the existing automated subsystems while utilizing the existing warehouse software systems. The focus was on the high-volume delivery of full pallets for single products, buffering small quantities of mixed box products and the delivery of staged single boxed mixed SKUs directly to the new shipping dock.

The expansion included a three-aisle Unit Load AS/RS buffering 1,000 pallets as well as a three-aisle Mini Load AS/RS buffering 3,000 boxes. Supporting these systems are hundreds of feet of case conveyor, a high-speed sortation and accumulation system, palletizers, stretch wrappers and pallet exchangers.

A well thought-out engineering and manufacturing plan, in addition to thorough installation, testing and commissioning schedules, gave our customer a transition to the new automated material handling system with no interference to their existing production and shipping system.

The new system operates with an equipment reliability of over 99%. This means product is delivered to the dock when and where it is needed without any performance issues from the equipment. The system was also designed for future expansion when the demand requires it. So keep eating your beef!
