Have you ever been waiting to board a plane and hear the announcement that your flight will be delayed because a part has malfunctioned and the crew is waiting for the part to be received? Airlines try to avoid these “Airplane on Ground” (AOG) situations at all costs with the intent to get the parts to the mechanics as soon as possible. This company has accepted the challenge by implementing a distribution system that has reduced cycle time picking parts orders by 60% and cut delivery time to mechanics by 21% for an average of 32,000 part orders per month.

AA partnership was established with this company to develop a three-aisle Mini Load system that would allow storage of 7,000 totes and open up 12,000 square feet for other expansions. An ergonomic front-end workstation with U-shaped conveyor for input/output to the Mini Load was designed with tables set for the average height of stock clerks and monitors on swing arms that can be height adjusted. Totes are delivered to the pick station where the terminal displays the items to pick, the quantity and the location of the hangar that will receive the order. Delivery personnel travel around the warehouse floor picking up order going to the hangar and returning used parts to the Mini Load.

If the order is a priority AOG, the system will trigger a yellow light at the workstation notifying the AOG part needs to be picked and delivered to the hangar immediately. The light will stay on until the part has been picked.

This system attributes to the success rate of making it possible for the company’s fleet of more than 400 aircraft to arrive at their destination on time.
