(Download this casestudy in pdf format)

    Features/Benefits Provided:

  • Reduced product damage.
  • Provides consistent material flow.
  • System will support future expansion needs.

Prior to each day's production run at this newspaper printing facility, a predetermined quantity of rolls are prepped and made available for production. The AS/RS moves un-prepped rolls from storage to the prep and paste conveyor where the kraft paper is manually removed and the end of each roll is cut clean and pasted for automatic insertion into the printing machine. The system then returns the prepped rolls to storage. When a printing press calls for a prepped roll, the AS/RS delivers the roll to a predetermined transfer car, which in turn feeds the roll into the printing machine. The AS/RS allows for large-volume roll storage with a minimum of floor space and quick access to any roll in inventory. The system is unique in that it provides the ability to prep rolls up to several days in advance. Prepped rolls are stored in the same rack structure as un-prepped rolls and are called to the printing press as they are required.

Storage and Retrieval Machines: Two single deep unit load storage and retrieval machines (SRMs) handle print rolls within the same aisle. The SRMs utilize a specialized shuttle that consists of two forks to pick up and deposit the rolls of newsprint. The SRMs transfer both un-prepped and prepped rolls.

Conveyors: Transporting prepped rolls is unique to the newspaper industry and requires that no damage be done to the outer wrap of newsprint. The system employs one roll induction conveyor to transport rolls from receiving to the AS/RS and a down-ender between the roll input conveyor and the storage rack. This device changes the roll orientation from the "eye in the sky" to the bilge position.

Storage Structure: The roll storage racks consists of one aisle that is 75 bays long by 10 levels high for a total of 1,500 locations. The maximum roll weight is 1-1/2 tons.
