Enclosure Manufacturer Achieves the Benefits of Modernization
Features/Benefits Provided:
- Inventory is accurate and manageable with the new material control flow system.
- Delivery time to retrieve product from the ASRS to the shipping lanes is significantly reduced.
- Non-proprietary controls.
The Company: Manufactures a wide range of electrical enclosures and accessories that provide the ultimate in protection and mounting surface capabilities. Founded in 1961, they have grown and developed into one of the world's largest enclosure manufactures.
The Challenge: In 2000, the company purchased a nearby distribution center that was first commissioned in 1986 for another company, but had stood unused for several years. The facility included a conventional warehouse plus a high-bay rack-supported warehouse with four (4) S/R machines. A decision was made to modernize the S/R machines, modify the racks in the high-bay to accommodate a taller load and replace the existing conveyor system.
The Solution: The central component of the new distribution operations is the totally modernized high-bay warehouse served by (4) S/R machines combined with a unique conveyor system that includes two (2) high-speed shuttle cars. Utilizing the same advanced drive technology as provided on the S/R machines, the main shuttle car is capable of moving up to 1,000 FPM across the front of the AS/RS. Loads retrieved from the AS/RS are deposited on output conveyors that transport the loads to the shuttle car that delivers them to one of four possible locations. Available choices are the two shipping lanes, a priority retrieve picking station or an alternate shipping lane that moves product back toward receiving for some 2nd and 3rd shift operations. The scope of work included modernizing S/R machines, modification of the existing rack, replacing the conveyor hardware and controls and a new material flow control system.
The Result: Inventory is accurate and real-time with the implementation of the new material flow control system interfaced to a CA Boss host computer, and the time to deliver product from storage in the AS/RS to the shipping lanes has been significantly reduced.
