After celebrating over 100 years of producing ice cream, this Alabama firm was running out of warehouse space. In order to keep up with growth, their key distribution cen¬ter needed to enlarge and streamline their op¬erations. Its 3,000 pallet position, freezer (-30° F) warehouse was quickly running out of room. Because it was a two-story facility, the firm knew they would need to go up to gain more storage space.

This main distribution center moves ice cream snacks from the production line to storage, directly to customers, or to 17 smaller DC’s across the country.

The initial phase of the project included a pallet conveying system which was necessary to bridge the 400’ distance between production and the new AS/ RS. In total, the Conveying System includes pallet transport and accumulation conveyors, an automatic label applicator, and a transfer car (T-car) which distributes 2 pallets at a time toward the freezers.

To streamline production and storage facility, the project’s second phase included installing an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) consisting of two Storage Retrieval Machines (S/RM) operating in one aisle. Each SRM holds 2 pallets enabling higher throughput rates, and has its own designated “working area” and safety zone. The AS/RS stores multiple size pallets 8 or 10 deep in the racks.

The system is 9 levels high and stores more than 7,000 pallets in only 14,000 sq.ft. of freezer space. The new Warehouse Management Software (WMS) controls, tracks and optimizes the product flows throughout for storage and order fulfillment.
