College Industry Council on Material Handling Education

2000-2001 Design Competition Summary

The College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) and The Material Handling Institute are pleased to announce the results of the 2001 Materials Handling Student Design Competition. Each team developed a plan to improve operations at Louisville Recycling, Inc. (LRI), presented in the design contest as a non-profit recycling center that sorts glass, plastics, aluminum and steel cans, office paper, newspaper, magazines, and cardboard. The LRI facility needed to double its capacity and each team was asked to develop a plan to improve the overall efficiency of the operation such that it could continue to operate one shift per day in the existing space. Safety, overall quality of the working environment and minimal capital investment were also considered in the design. Each team had to submit engineering drawings as part of their report.
