Conveyor Industry Group

The Conveyor & Sortation Systems (CSS) members are the Industry’s leading providers of conveyors and sortation systems. They design, fabricate and install conveyor and sortation systems worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector. CSS prepares and distributes educational and promotional materials regarding the proper application and benefits of conveyor and sortation system solutions.

CSS also publishes and promotes materials on the training, inspection, safety and maintenance of conveyors and sortation systems. The Vertical Reciprocating Conveyer (VRC) Subcommittee of CSS is comprised of the industry’s leading suppliers of material lifts. They design, manufacture, and install VRCs worldwide for use in a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and institutional operating environments.

What is a Conveyor?

A conveyor is a horizontal, inclined or vertical device commonly used in manufacturing and distribution facilities to move material, packages or objects. Conveyors usually consist of a looped belt or chain moving along a pre-determined path and having points of loading and discharge, fixed or selective. A sortation system merges, identifies, inducts, separates and conveys products to specific destinations.

Conveyors and sortation systems allow for more efficient retail, wholesale, and manufacturing distribution. They are also a labor saving system that allows large volumes or material and/or product to move and be sorted rapidly through a process, allowing companies to ship or receive higher volumes with smaller storage space and with less labor expense.

What We Do

Conveyor & Sortation Systems members meet regularly to discuss the industry and promote the best and largest possible market for conveyors and sortation systems; consistent with the best interest of the user. CSS pursues this mission through planned programs and internal committees by:

  1. Working closely with user groups to communicate needs, benefits and applications.
  2. Acting as a catalyst and liaison between different related product groups or associations.
  3. Maintaining a membership representative of the industry.
  4. Promoting the general welfare of the industry.
  5. Providing a market driven forum for material flow solutions.
  6. Collecting, compiling, disseminating and exchanging information and statistics which may be helpful to the membership.
  7. Preparing and distributing educational materials for both academic classroom environments and in continuing education.

VRC Application Guidelines

The Application Guidelines for Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors were thoroughly revised from the original 1991 Version which they replace. They were prepared as a result of the VRC Sub-Committee's recognition of a need to develop comprehensive safety guidelines and establish a minimum design criteria for when such are used in conjunction with ASME B20.1 - The Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment.
