A foundry in Indiana was fighting a losing battle with their aging fleet of air hoists. Maintenance costs and downtime were increasing, and replacement parts were becoming hard to get. Something had to change. They evaluated their options.

One choice was to replace their air hoists with different air hoists that would require less maintenance and had better parts availability. Another choice was to replace their air hoists with heavy duty reliable electric chain hoists. While their perception that the severity of the application pointed to the air hoist, the heavy duty electric chain hoist held appeal due to reliability, fewer parts, and ease of operation. They decided to try the electric chain hoist by installing it in their most demanding application. The electric chain hoist performed well in this test, and the foundry was convinced that modern heavy duty electric chain hoists can be an appropriate choice for demanding applications like theirs.

As a result, the foundry embarked on a project to change their fleet to the electric chain hoist. One by one, as an air hoist required maintenance, it was replaced. After replacing more than 50 hoists this way over 18 months, the original electric chain hoist was still operating flawlessly.

The foundry has enjoyed many benefits from this experience. They realized drastic reductions in down time and maintenance costs. They were able to significantly reduce their inventory of spare parts. And, higher productivity allowed the foundry to improve its overall production.

The lesson here: Advances in the design and engineering of modern electric chain hoists can produce a hoist that can stand up to severe applications previously thought to be the domain of air hoists.
