A major motorcycle manufacturer receives several different OEM parts, including metal stampings, forgings, electrical components, and seats. This produced a lot of disposable packaging until the company began using ROPAK รค returnable containers. The potential for damaging parts during handling or transit has also been reduced. By using dunnage inside the containers the parts are carefully cradled and protected.

"We have some very heavy parts like castings and forgings that weigh up to 1200 lbs. each", says one of the packaging engineers. "In the past, we did not have a good way of protecting them. As a consequence, there was potential to compromise quality and safety." By using standardized container sizes, the company was able to cube-out unit and trailer loads, and standardize on plant equipment such as storage racks.

Since empty containers must be returned to suppliers and shipment frequency is great, being able to completely fill trailers reduces returnable transportation costs. The container's ability to collapse greatly economizes its return and staging when it is empty.

In the plant, the containers can be double stacked and still give operators access to either container at the same time. A company employee was quoted as saying " You wouldn't believe how much space it saves us on the assembly line, where real estate is always at a premium."
