MH1 Standards on Pallets, Slip Sheets and Other Bases for Unit-Loads now Administered by Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA)

(March 15, 2006 | Charlotte, NC) Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) announces that it has assumed the responsibility for administering MH1, the premier committee developing U.S. standards related to "pallets, slip sheets and other bases for unit-loads." The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently authorized the transfer of the work from ASME to MHI.

MHIA CEO, John Nofsinger, says, "We are pleased to bring this work within MHIA. This is an ideal home for administration of this important standards work because of the focus and breadth of interests represented within the MHIA membership. MHIA member companies produce pallets and load platforms utilizing a wide variety of shapes, sizes and materials."

The Chairman of the MH1 committee, Dr. Mark White of Virginia Tech, says, "I am very excited about the opportunities that will come from this transfer of management of the MH1 committee. In the trade, MHIA represents the unit load handling equipment suppliers and currently manages the MH 10 committee concerning Unit Loads and Transport Packaging. By adding the MH1 committee on pallet standards to MHIA activities, communications between the designers of all components of the unit load supply chain will be enhanced. From this will come new opportunities for improvements in materials handling efficiency."

The MH1 committee recently published a revision of its MH1 standard titled, "Pallets, Slip Sheets and Other Bases for Unit Loads." The standard was approved on November 30, 2005 and is a revision of the 1997 version. It is generally revised on a three to five year cycle.

In addition to serving as the Secretariat of the ANSI accredited MH1 committee, MHIA will serve the same role for the US Technical Advisory Group (USTAG) that develops U.S. positions for the international Technical Committee 51 (ISO/TC51) on "Pallets for Unit Load Method of Materials Handling."

Questions regarding membership and participation on the MH1 committee or the USTAG to ISO/TC51 should be addressed to either Mike Ogle or Ray Niemeyer who will be serving as co-Secretary.

MHIA is an international trade association that has represented this industry since 1945. MHIA members include material handling equipment and systems manufacturers, integrators, consultants, publishers, and third party logistics providers. Member companies come from all areas of material handling and various parts of the world, making MHIA a strong national and international representative for the material handling industry. Much of the work of the industry is done within its product-specific sections, councils and affiliates. The association also sponsors trade events, such as ProMat and NA 2006 to showcase the products and services of its member companies and to educate industry professionals on the productivity solutions provided through material handling and logistics.
