Problem
A leading manufacturer of bleached paperboard, which is used for everything from food cartons to posterboard for schools, is hugely successful although their old storage system was not.
The storage system had been spread out over four or five buildings, which was very inconvenient. And because it was all located on one level, it ate up a tremendous amount of floor space. In addition, the area was not being managed efficiently and parts were everywhere.
Solution
A total of 260 standard-width cabinets which are used to house a diverse array of items -from motors, tools and static-sensitive parts to office products like envelopes and legal pads were purchased.
The cabinets that have had the most dramatic impact are the 49 cabinets contained in two mezzanine systems. The company decided that a mezzanine system was the most economical, space-efficient way to go. It was more cost effective to build an additional mezzanine than an entire floor.
The system will enable the company to accommodate not only future growth in terms of size but in terms of technical capabilities. At some point, they intend to install a barcode system for inventory control. The drawers are constructed in such a way that a barcode can be placed on the drawer and easily scanned, providing tremendous accuracy.
Everyone who uses the system loves it. From the store clerks, who are responsible for receiving items, to the issue clerks, who fill the request for tools or parts for the maintenance personnel. They know exactly how many parts are in a particular drawer and exactly where the parts are located.
"Everyone who uses the system loves it. It's fair to say that it has made everyone's life easier," notes The Supervisor of Stores.
