General Information & Brief Economic Summary
Australia's developed market economy is dominated by its services sector (70% of GDP), yet it is the agricultural and mining sectors (7% of GDP combined) that account for the bulk (57%) of Australia's goods and services exports. Australia's comparative advantage in primary products is a reflection of the natural wealth of the Australian Continent and its small domestic market; 19.5 million people occupy a continent the size of the contiguous United States. Australia is again one of the fastest growing economies. The Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Australia that came into effect on January 1, 2005 eliminated 99% of tariffs on U.S.-manufactured industrial and consumer goods, and all agricultural products exported to Australia.

Standards
Australia is a signatory to the GATT/WTO Standards Code. Use of quality standards, such as the ISO 9000 series, is increasing. Standards Australia, the national standards body, has a Quality Assessment section and can provide a list of those companies adhering to the ISO 9000 series. Both Standards Australia and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in New York have current information of Australian standards.
