General Information & Brief Economic Summary

With its estimated 192 million inhabitants, Brazil has the largest population in Latin America and ranks fifth in the world. Brazil's economy is highly diversified with wide variations in levels of development. Brazil has one of the most advanced industrial sectors in Latin America. Most large industry is concentrated in the south and southeast. Brazil has a diverse and sophisticated services industry as well. Market opening and economic stabilization have significantly enhanced Brazil's growth prospects. Brazil's exports have nearly doubled in the last decade, and imports have more than doubled.

Standards

ABNT, the Brazillian Association for Technical Standards (Associacao Brasilera de Normas Technicas), is the recognized standards organization. INMETRO, a government entity, is the national accreditation body, is responsible for all aspects of metrology and is the operating arm of CONMETRO, the national committee that oversees the work of SINMETRO. National voluntary standards in all sectors are developed by ABNT. In some areas, ABNT bases its standards on those of ISO and IEC and on occasion on U.S. standards. ABNT is also a certification organization for both products and systems. Brazil, a member of the World trade Organization (WTO), signed the TBT agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade, affirming its WTO obligations to use international standards to the maximum extent possible. Responsibilities under the TBT agreement include the establishment of a national inquiry point to serve as a central location for information on standards-related issues, including proposed mandatory regulations. The Brazillian inquiry point is INMETRO in Rio de Janeiro. The US inquiry point is the NCSCI, located at NIST.
