General Information & Brief Economic Summary

New Zealand offers an attractive market for American companies. The obvious advantages of an English-Speaking, stable democracy are enhanced by a vibrant economy with business practices very similar to those in the United States.

New Zealand's sophisticated business, financial, and legal infrastructure makes it a low risk, high return market. U.S. companies have achieved success in New Zealand largely because it is one of the world's least regulated markets. The composition of New Zealand's economy implies a permanent - albeit competitive - market for products and technologies serving the energy, oil and gas, forestry, agriculture, and construction sectors. In addition, there are good prospects for products in information technology and communications, whose applications cut across industries.

The New Zealand economy has experienced more that six years of continuous growth, expanding 4.5% in 2004.

Standards

The New Zealand Standards Council oversees the development and adoptions of standards and standards-related products. Standards New Zealand is the national standards body and represents New Zealand in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Recognizing the close ties between the two economies, Standards New Zealand cooperates closely with Standards Australia to develop joint Australian-New Zealand standards (ASNZS) that are substantially based on international standards. The Active Co-operation Agreement with Standards Australia is also intended to meet both nations' obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO). Standards are voluntary unless cited in regulations.
