Independence, OH – Avtron Industrial Automation’s, Crane System group recently completed the start-up and commissioning of the first of two clamshell cranes located at the St. Lawrence Stevedoring’s Quebec facility. Start-up was completed in conjunction with several mechanical projects being carried out.

 

Each crane is outfitted with two motor-generator sets. Motor-generator sets were controlled by an outdated field supply system. A separate fixed field supply excited the motor field and only allowed the motor to run at a single field point. This inhibited the crane from operating above base speed on light loads which caused loss of production. Controls were obsolete with little to no support available from the original manufacturer. Due to a heavy production schedule, it was vital that St. Lawrence Stevedoring eliminate their downtime exposure.

 

Avtron provided its proven ADDvantage-32 Digital Motor-Generator controls (DMG). These digital field packages not only control the generator field but also provide a digital motor field supply. Controlling both the generator and motor fields allows the crane to be operated in the most optimum fashion. Motor filed current is automatically weakened on light loads to produce more speed on the crane. Faster speeds provides more cycles per hour of the crane increasing its production.

 

Upgrading of the Field Control packages is part of a two phase project to automate the cranes. Phase II will allow the cranes production to be increased by an automated routine for loading and unloading ships.
