Unique Sortation Solution Increases Throughput Rate by 30%

(Download this casestudy in pdf format)

“The Intralox solution was ideally suited to this application, which required higher capacity and expandability as well as a custom fit within some very challenging space restrictions."

Features / Benefits Provided:
  • Higher capacity within existing footprint
  • Positive divert with decreased slippage
  • Ensured product orientation

Experiencing capacity constraints in its 200,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility, a seventy-five year old wine and spirits distribution company hired an integrator to determine the best way to increase throughput capacity without completely overhauling the existing system and to replace an existing sortation system with a higher rate system.

The existing sorter used a line-shaft swivel-wheel sorter to direct wooden, shrink-wrapped, and plastic cartons into 14 lanes. Cartons were then descrambled and released sequentially for last-stop-first truck loading.

The new solution needed to have a positive divert with less slippage than the existing swivel-wheel sorter and to handle a variety of product sizes, weights, and packaging type within a compact footprint featuring close divert centers of 39 inches.

The integrator recommended an Intralox Activated Roller Belt™ (ARB) sortation system, featuring patented conveyance technology. The sorter is a low-maintenance, fast and accurate 90 degree, or right angle, system that is able to maintain short-edge-leading carton orientation. ARB manipulates the movement of cartons on the conveyor belt via embedded belt rollers without using rails or complicated controls.

With a compact design, the Intralox sorter fit seamlessly into the current facility layout. Because the sorter is easy to modify, the client can expand capacity and increase throughput simply by adding diverts.
