Echo The time elapsed between pulse emission and reception that is used to determine target position in an ultrasonic proximity sensor.

Economic Justification A comparison of alternative material handling equipment and the assessment of its impact on a company as far as taxes, depreciation, inflation and initial cost.  Generally does involve activity based costing.

Effective beam The usable beam diameter in photoelectric transmitted beam sensing which equals the lens diameter of the light source and receiver.

Efficient Consumer Response This initiative, begun in the grocery industry, that "links" all the components in the supply channel from the producer of the goods to the point of sale so as to create efficiencies in replenishments, inventory levels, promotions and new product introductions.

Efficient cubing Refers to the optimal usage of the internal space of truck trailers.

Electric Hoist A suspended machinery unit that is powered by electrically driven motors and is used to lift or lower a freely suspended (unguided) load.  Generally uses chain or wire rope as its lifting medium.

Electric overhead crane A crane with a single or multiple girder (bridge girder) bridge carrying a movable or fixed hoisting mechanism and traveling on an overhead fixed runway structure with all or most movements powered by electric motors.

Electrification The track mounted conductor system by which the moving equipment receives its electrical power. All of the electrical components that go into providing power to an electric overhead crane or jib crane.  These components may include power bar, collectors, collector rings, pendent stations, and tagline/festooning.

Electronic data interchange A process by which the purchasing operation of one company is electronically linked with the order entry operation of another in order to "speed" ordering, reduce the amount of paperwork and hopefully keep errors to a minimum.

Electrostatic protection Protection from static charges.

Empty pallet stacker A transporter or device used to distribute, move and store empty pallets.

Enclosed track A track section, usually in a rectangular tube shape, that possesses a continuous slot running lengthwise along the underside of the section.  This slot permits carriers and end trucks to travel on the interior bottom flange of the track section.

Enclosed track monorail A track section, usually in a rectangular tube shape, that possesses a continuous slot running lengthwise along the underside of the section.  This slot permits carriers and end trucks to travel on the interior bottom flange of the track section.

End effector An attachment, such as grippers, spraying nozzles, welding tooling, and measuring devices, connected to the mechanical portion of a manipulator, balancers, positioner, or robot.  Generally designed to fit a certain need and or lifting situation but is not restricted to single task.

End/side axle load capacity The maximum amount of single axle laod (in the case of rolling loads) which may be applied to the loading edge of a lift platform (end or side) when the lift is in its raised position.

End/side edge load capacity The maximum amount of static load that can be applied to the edge of a platform (end or side) when the lift is in any raised position.

Enterprise resource planning Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP, is a refinement to MRP/MRP II.  With the addition of a relational database, a graphical user interface, and client/server architecture, ERP is a time- and capital-intensive inventory management system.

Ergonomic

The design of working conditions to better accommodate the human body's capabilities and limitations (human factors).

Ergonomics is also known as the study of work tasks with an emphasis on reducing to a practical minimum the physiological cost of doing the work.

ESD container Any container that is designed to dissipate electrostatic discharge via it's material composition or configuration.

ESD product Any product designed to dissipate electrostatic discharge in it's construction or composition.

ESD tote A tote or bin that is designed to dissipate electrostatic discharge via it's composition materials or configuration.

Euro-pallet

The standard pallet in Europe. It is 1200 mm by 800 mm in dimension and has a wood block design between the top and bottom permitting four-way or four-sided entrance by lifting forks. Although other sizes exist in Europe, they are not nearly as prominent as the Euro-pallet.

Excess gain The point at which just enough light intensity is present to trigger a photoelectric sensor given the usable area of the lens,  For example, an excess gain of two would mean that just enough light intensity is present to trigger a sensor with 50% of the lens obscured with contaminants.

Exchange pallet Refers to a pallet that is used by several shippers whose ownership is transferred when the ownership of the unit load is transferred.

Expendable pallet A pallet utilized for a single transaction and is not expected to be returned.

Explosion proof

Equipment designed in accordance with existing codes and standards such that it will opearate in a specified hazardous environment without causing an explosion.  For further information, contact the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
