R- Mark
In 1998, the members of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) voluntarily chose to cause conformance to RMI 97 and any successor documents(s) to be a condition of membership in the Association.
In 1999, the members of RMI agreed to a certification process administered through a panel of independent Registered Professional Engineers. Certification requires the submitter to demonstrate a working knowledge of RMI 97 including delivering evidence of various physical tests needed to compute frame and beam load tables.
Upon satisfactory completion of the Certification Process, the submitter is awarded a license to apply a unique registered R-Mark to designs. The R-Mark is only applied by a Licensed Professional Engineer along side of his/her PE seal.
The process is open to all rack manufacturers. RMI encourages specifiers and users of Industrial Steel Storage Rack to consider the value of R-Mark certification when applying racking solutions.

A reinforcing element added for increased strength at critically stressed points.
Reach truck
Industrial trucks equipped with a telescoping fork arrangement that permits the stacking of loads double deep. For storage depths greater than two, there is at least one example in Europe where the fork unit mechanically disengages from the mast allowing it to run into the rack on narrow rails under its own power which is derived from the truck via an umbilical cord. Applications like this can be considered a very special case of a drive-in type storage rack.
Read/Write Tag
Technology that allows for a identification tag to be programmed and revised while the tag is still on the container, rack or pallet.
Record shelving
A shelving storage system to store files and records. The units are sized at the time of order to "fit" the parameters of the files and records to be stored. These shelving systems are generally closed on three sides and may have retractable or swing up and down opening covers, all to provide security, protection and cleanliness.

These shelving systems are generally closed on three sides and may have retractable or swing up and down opening covers, all to provide security, protection and cleanliness.
May also be known as "Archive shelving".
Reel racks
A storage rack configuration (one or more levels high) that is designed specifically to store reels of materials such as cable and cord. The reels are "cradled" in the rack.
Reinforcing member
The component of rack decking which increases the capacity rating and rigidity of the assembly. Examples are: channels, tubes, rods, etc.
Reliability
The measure of how well a material handling device or system will perform in a production situation. Measure is based upon how well the device or system performs without interruption in service due to mechanical or control failure.
Rental pallet
A pallet owned by a third party, different from the actual user.
Return on investment
A management tool that calculates the income of a material handling investment or project and divides this income by the cost of the assets devoted to the investment or project.
A valuable tool when calculating the "economic justification" of a material handling investment.
Returnable container labeling
The method used to mark/identify returnable/reusable container and pallets to insure that they return to the proper destination. Can be as simple as stenciling or as sophisticated as barcoding.
Returnable plastic container
Refers to collapsible, hand-held plastic containers used mostly for produce handling in closed loop packaging systems.
Returnable/reusable pallet
A pallet designed to be used for more than one trip.

Reusable Plastic Pallet and Container Association
The Reusable Plastic Pallet & Container Association (RPCPA) was created by a group of visionary manufacturers who design, fabricate and apply Reusable Plastic Pallet and Container Solutions on a worldwide scale.
A product section of the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), RPCPA members make a substantial commitment of time & resources to the long-term health and welfare of the industry.
RPCPA programming is intended to:
- Create awareness and recognition of Reusable Plastic Pallet and Container Solutions as environmentally friendly and cost effective platform for material handling and logistics
- Develop and deliver important information on proper application and use through publications and educational activities

Roller belt conveyor
A powered form of conveyor where the transporting belt is supported by rollers spaced along the frame, not unlike a gravity roller section. Roller conveyor
A series of roller supported in a frame over which objects are advanced manually, by gravity, or by power.
Roller diverter
A device on a conveyor sortation system used to move a case/carton/piece off the main line. This device utilizes "pop-up" type rollers to redirect the object in a predetermined direction.

Rotary rack
A rotary rack is a special variation of a horizontal carousel. In this case each vertical level or storage location is mechanically independent of the location above or beneath it. Each level in turn is driven by a separate and independent drive. Therefore, simultaneous, independent rotation of each level is possible (in any direction). Although replenishment and picking can be accomplished manually, most rotary racks incorporate automatic load inserters and extractors. See also Horizontal Carousels and/or AS/RS.
Rotational molded pallet
A predetermined amount of powdered, granulated or liquid plastic is introduced into a hollow, shell-like mold. This is followed by the closing, heating and rotating of the mold in two planes perpendicular to each other in order to distribute and fuse or "sinter" the plastic material to the internal configuration of the mold.
Once the plastic mold is fully cured and the part is fully formed, the mold is removed from the eat source, and it undergoes accelerated cooling using either a water mist or cold air. The pallet is then removed from the mold.
